Deleting or Banning Users

Banned is such a harsh word. Way too harsh for us warm hearted teachers, but we must also remember that Wetpaint was not made out right for education and in a society that sees a lot of Spam users banned...it is the perfect word.

Many of you have been writing in on the forums lately wanting to know how to delete old students from the wiki. Seeing it's the start of a new year and probably a new semester of learning for most, this is a great time to do a little wiki house cleaning and delete old users from your system.

Here's how you do it:

1. Log into your wiki. Only moderators and up can ban members.

2. Click on Members

3. Click on the profile of a member you want to ban (delete) and then click on view profile

4. Click on Change Permissions

5. Choose Banned and confirm by clicking on Change Permissions

There you have it! The step by step guide to deleting/banning members from your wiki. Now go out there and clean up those wikis.

Setting Up Your Students with Accounts

Naturally you will want to setup your class as quickly and easily as possible.

This can be done in two ways.

Method 1: (Recommended)

I recommend the teacher book the school lab and have all students JOIN the wiki all at once. Method 2 could be used to add students absent or that need to be added later. Basically the protections on the site will be removed so all students can join and then put back on to secure the wiki.

Teachers must first OPEN the wiki so anyone can join. I suggest you open the wiki before class. It takes up to 10 minutes from when you change the permission settings of your wiki. Choose Settings (Top Right) and then click on the PERMISSIONS TAB (shown below).
Next Choose "I want to change These Setting" button.

3. Next you will have to change Who can VIEW your site. Choose EVERYONE. This way your students can get in. This will be changed back to INVITED MEMBERS after everyone is invited to LOCK DOWN the wiki again.

4. Change Who can EDIT your site to "ANYONE who Joins Your WIKI". This way your students can make changes. Remember you can change a students level of access at any time.

5. REMEMBER!!

Every student needs to create their own accounts according to the ACCOUNTS RULES. Improper accounts can be deleted or banned.
Close the wiki back down when you are done so you don't get unwanted visitors
Verify each account. I used this method in a library lab once and one of the students in the library (not in my class) decided to follow along in the fun.

Method 2:

The teacher can send and INVITE out to all students to be included in the class wiki. Please note students will create their own accounts from your invitation. Make sure they follow our USER ACCOUNTS rules. This is very important.

The problem with this method is the teacher must type in all the email addresses of their students and then HOPE students follow the USER ACCOUNT rules.

The Board will be providing FIRST CLASS email to all students but at this point I am not sure when that will be in place.
Not every student has a personal email.

Security Statement

Security of our students is not optional. Follow the guidelines to creating a
safe classroom wiki.

The wiki must be private and students can be invited by their board assigned email only.
Doug Sadler (doug_sadler@wecdsb.on.ca) must be added as an administrator.
Invite one School Administrator to the site
Include the Wiki Student Conduct Statement
Student User Names must be their first name and a number (no last names and no nicknames)

Wiki Student Conduct

This statement must be placed on the front (home page) of your class wiki.

Rules of Conduct:

This Wiki is to be used as an academic forum only. Personal comments of any nature are strictly prohibited. The same expectations from the normal classroom are applicable while utilizing the WIKI. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action and referral to the Vice Principal.

Classroom Wiki Check List

Step One	All classroom wikis must be closed to the public. You can make this determination when you build the wiki or Choose "Settings" button and then "Permissions" Your tab should look like the one below.
Step Two	Students must be invited to your wiki. This can be done by choosing "My Profile" and then "Invitations". Choose "send more invitations" as shown below to add more students". Next email an invitation to each student's email account. DO NOT email to a student's personal account. Email only to a student's board approved student email account. It is recommended to give each student "writer" access. This will allow student to edit content adequately. Send a brief message instructing students on the ONLY Acceptable Account Names. "Hello, You have been invited to the "blank" classroom wiki. Please create an account using your first name and any number. NO LAST NAMES Ex. Joe873. Use any picture you want as long as it is appropriate for classroom use."
Step Three	Invite Doug Sadler to your wiki as an "administrator". This way the board is aware of your wiki and you can use Doug's Expertise to get you started. Once the wiki is underway you should add at least one administrator from your school and give them administrator access. Make sure you explain to them what your site is all about prior to the email. This is added protection to make sure the site is monitored.
Step Four	Place the following disclaimer on your FRONT page. Rules of Conduct: This Wiki is to be used as an academic forum only. Personal comments of any nature are strictly prohibited. What should I do first?

If you just created your Wetpaint site, you are probably wondering what to do next. Here are some tips and links to useful information to help get your site off to a good start. These tips will also help you get through the Wetpaint Orientation.

Add a profile image.
Edit your Profile - On your profile page click EasyEdit to start editing.
Add a few pages to your site.
Add some links so visitors can easily navigate to all of the pages.
Add content to the pages so that they aren't blank. Types of content you mightadd include text, links, images, videos, music players, polls, tables, and more! See the FAQ page for more details.
Add a Thread to the site.
Change your wiki's settings.
Don't forget to add those Keyword Tags.
Be sure to invite some friends to help out with the site!

Getting Started

The Start Page:

The Site Name will appear on the top of the browser window and will appear if someone bookmarks your site.

Create URL/ Address is one of the most important choices you make. Whatever you choose will be the web address your students will have to remember to get to your site. Keep it as short and discriptive as possible. For this site I choose "wikibasics" so the URL is www.wikibasics.wetpaint.com .

What is your wiki about? This is a discription of what your wiki is about. This is extremely important if your site is public as GOOGLE will use it to catalog your site. However, if your site is a classroom site it should be closed and this will not matter as much.

Choose a category: Select EDUCATION. This way you can email wetpaint and have the advertising removed from the site.

Who can view your wiki? This must be INVITED MEMBERS ONLY. This way your the wiki is not visible to anyone not invited.

Next choose a style? You will have 3 pages of styles to choose from. These can be changed after the fact.

Lastly you will be asked to invite members to your wiki. Only invite members when you are ready.

User Accounts

It is imperitive students do not use their full name at anytime on the wiki. Students must use their first name and a number such as Joe867. The number is needed because the wiki website Wetpaint has many many users so a number is need for differentiation. Nicknames should not be used.

Attaching a file to the wiki is very easy. Select "Add an attachment" located in the "Page Toolbox" as shown below.

You may add as many attachments as you like but they must be less than 2MB in size.

Once the attachment is uploaded to the wiki move your mouse ontop of the attachment link and RIGHT mouse click.

Choose Copy Link Location using Firefox Browser.:

Choose Copy Shortcut using MS Explorer Browser:

The location of the attachment is now on the clipboard. Next choose your text then make it a link using the clipboard.
